Kap Kaps are decorated with turtleshell made into a fine fretwork and are found throughout most regions of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. This particular kap kap is from the Mekeo tribe on the southern cost of papua New Guinea, to the west of Port Moresby. They are both adornment and wealth objects. Mekeo people wear them in the hair, on belts and also adorning large headdresses.
