Whether it’s the riddle of the Sphinx, or you just want to knock like an Egyptian, this Victorian cast iron door knocker evokes the obsession with ancient Egypt that was ignited at the time of Napoleon’s attempted conquest of the delta in 1798. The Egyptian style crept into interior decoration and was used architecturally as well. This piece has the number 310 on the back, probably from an ironmongery pattern book.
