A Pair of Paris Porcelain Vases, c. 1830

c. 1830
glazed and gilt enamelled porcelain
13 cm high each
$600

The high point of beauty and quality in French porcelain was the Sevres factory.  In order to keep up with the aristocracy, many smaller factories in Paris supplied the growing middle classes, the bourgeoisie, with affordable wares that copied the Sevres style. This pair of gilt enamelled Paris porcelain vases date from about 1830. Their wonderful gold lion masks and paw feet follow a neoclassical Sevres model. On the front and back of the vases are painted scenes of courting couples- one pair in a “Turkish” costume the other in what was called “Le Style Troubadour”, which referred to something vaguely mediaeval. Together the couples are poised in a landscape which echos on the reverse of one, and on the other a rosy still life.
