Bronze of Cupid Dressed as a Warrior, circa 1900

circa 1900
cast bronze on an ebonised plinth
34 x 13.5 x 11.5 cm
$220

Cupid is usually depicted as a plump floating baby but here he assumes a more martial pose. In his plumed helmet and raised arm (probably originally holding a spear) he is prepared to strike someone’s heart in a big way. Probably originally a finial from a piece of furniture he has been mounted on a base and now acts as a charming classical sculpture in his own right.
