A Royal Doulton Jardiniere, c.1870

c.1870
glazed stoneware
18.5 x 19.5 cm
$200

Originally a company that founded its fortunes on the manufacture of clay sewer pipes during the industrial revolution, Doulton also became famous for its art pottery at a time when the Arts and Crafts movement was advocating a return to honesty, rather than everything being dressed up in some Louis revival or sham Gothic style so beloved of the Victorians.

This jardiniere in earthy tones and touches of gilt is painted with flowers in a style that perfectly proclaims William Morris’ dictum: “have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”.
