Wedgwood Ravenstone Vase Lrg, 20th Century

first half 20th century
glazed earthenware with coloured enamels
24.5 × 18.5 cm

The venerable yet innovative 18th century firm of Wedgwood always continued to adapt to modern tastes and these urns were designed in the 1930s by works manager Norman Wilson, who was a master potter and inventor. This large vase features the Ravenstone black glaze which is a satin or eggshell finish that subtly highlights the pared back neo-classical simplicity of the form which is an Art Deco interpretation of an ancient pattern.
