The fascination with the south seas that began with Captain Cook in the 18th century continued into the 20th century with many cruise ships travelling through the Islands en route to Sydney. These little bowls, (in Maori Kumete) were made in traditional designs, one symmetrical, the other in the recognisable hooked design. Once sold as souvenirs they are handmade reminders of the elegant days of travel and celebration of cultures.
