Murder, history, animals either exotic or domestic or country scenes all formed subject matter for the hugely popular Staffordshire group. They were a mass produced form of “folk art” created by the people, for the people and reflected their social obsessions from Queen Victoria’s spaniels to a model of a house where an infamous murder took place. This courting couple in a vine wretched bower illustrate a scene from Shakespeare or a romantic novel, presenting the perfect idea of 19th century happiness.
