Silver and coconut shell
10.5 × 10 cm
Silver and coconut shell with plain and lappeted rim engraved with the crest of a bird, plain shield shaped escutcheon on a short moulded pedestal foot.
Nowadays our coconut water might be essential to your sense of well being, but the sheer exoticism and rarity of the coconut in mediaeval times gave it supernatural qualities, one of which was the belief that a cup made of the shell would neutralise poison. Many a princely collection featured richly mounted coconut cups and covers in their display of silver and gold treasure. In the rational 18th century, the age of discovery, they still held a fascination and became fashionable drinking vessels, with pretty silver mounts usually unmarked.
