Early 19th Century Mallet Shaped Decanter

c. 19th century
amethyst glass with a spherical stopper
23 cm high
$240

Coloured glass is evocative in symbolism. During the 19th century, glass colours signified a coded language. Blue glass was often used for poison, green glass was common and used for human consumption like water and soda, red glass was considered luxurious as gold was used to change the colour.

Amethyst glass? Slightly more mysterious… What is known is amethyst glass certainly is pretty. This little decanter could be for that small batch artisanal gin on your drinks tray or maybe just to sit on your shelf making pretty shadows in the light.
